Great Crested Newt mile

We are very lucky to have pockets of populations of Great Crested Newts across Lockleaze and Stoke Park. However this endangered species needs your help! We are looking to assist people, particularly in the higher end of Romney Avenue area (from Trinity Academy up) to create ponds in their garden in order to increase newt numbers, and also join up their habitat so they can move between areas and increase their feeding/breeding range. Creating a pond will not only benefit newts, but will also bring a whole host of fascinating creatures into your garden, as well as providing a stop off for birds and hedgehogs to drink.

It’s the most powerful action you can take for nature in your garden, and it’s a joy watching an oasis form in your own backyard. If you live in the Romney Avenue area and would like a pond in your garden, please contact Eric at ecologist@lockleazent.co.uk and we will see how we can help.

As well having a pond it’s important to provide undisturbed areas in your garden such as log piles and long grass as newts spend a lot of time out of water as well, including finding a quiet spot to hibernate over winter, until returning to the pond to breed in spring.
