Buy Less, Buy Local

Buying fewer things, to have a greater impact!

By Alice Bourne-Wooldridge, Community Climate Action Champion

We are fast approaching Christmas, which can be both an exciting and stressful time for many. Introducing new habits during this season can seem impossible. With this in mind, we will be sharing a range of earth-conscious ideas that can be easily swapped into your Christmas lifestyle.

We've convinced ourselves that to show love is to buy people loads of stuff. It’s a tough habit to break. This week we are following on from Black Friday discussions around consumption and thinking about how this can relate to Christmas shopping.

Read on for our top tips around reducing consumption this Christmas...

  • Secret Santa

Secret Santa is a great way to reduce the number of gifts coming into our homes. Instead of buying a gift for everyone, try doing Secret Santa with your friends and family instead. Write a wishlist and set a spending limit so that you will all get one thing you really want.

  • Local or secondhand

We are very lucky to have a range of independent businesses in Bristol. Visit the Christmas markets or look online for creators local to Lockleaze. Charity shops and online second hand sites, such as Ebay or buy nothing facebook groups, are also worth looking at.

  • Sponsorships and gifts of time

Experiences, adoptions and memberships can make for great gifts, especially if the person you are buying for is decluttering. If not, make your own vouchers. Teach someone a skill of yours. Arrange a trip to somewhere you both want to visit. The list is endless!

We would love to hear about your Christmas traditions and favourite things to gift to others. Get in touch by email, via social media or pop up to the Hub.
